Renmin University of China is a research-oriented comprehensive university focusing on humanities and social sciencesIt is directly under the Ministry of Education of China andis jointly financed and supported by China’s Ministry of Education and the Beijing Municipal government. It can be traced back to Shanbei Public School, founded in 1937 in the midst of Anti-Japanese War. Later it became the North China United University, and then North China University. On December 16th, 1949, advised by the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the 11thAdministrative Meeting of the National Administration Council passed “The Resolution on the Establishment of Renmin University of China”. On October 3rd, 1950, the North China University was renamed as Renmin University of China. It was the first modern university founded by the People’s Republic of China. Eminent educationalists Prof. Wu Yuzhang, Prof. Cheng Fangwu, Prof. Yuan Baohua, Prof. Huang Da, Prof. Li Wenhai, Prof. Ji Baocheng and Prof. Chen Yulu were presidents of the university successively. The current President is Prof. LIN Shangli. Prof. Dr. ZHANG Donggang is the incumbent Chair of the University Council.

 

Shanbei Public School

After the July 7 incident of1937, the CPC Central Committee decided at the end of July to establish Shanbei Public School to bring up hundreds of thousands of revolutionary comrades to meet the needs of the Anti-Japanese War. In August, 1937, Cheng Fangwu was appointed as the principal and party secretary of Shanbei Public School. Affiliated to the Organization Department and Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, Shanbei Public School practiced the Principal Accountability System under the leadership of the Party and the Youth League. During two years of operation, it educated more than 6000 students and absorbed more than 3000 young people into the Communist Party of China.

 

North China United University

In the summer of 1939, Japanese aggressors and the Kuomintang die-hards intensified their attacks on liberated areas, changing the situation of the Anti-Japanese War. In June, the CPC Central Committee decided to merger Shanbei Public School, Luxun Academy of Arts, Yan’an School of Workers, and Anwu Youth Training Centre into one institution named North China United University, which was later moved to areas behind the enemy lines in North China. On July 7, North China United University was founded in Yan’an. Cheng Fangwu was appointed President and Secretary of the Party Group of the University. The Principal Accountability System was implemented under the leadership of the Party. Social Sciences Department, Arts Department, Workers’ Department, and Youth Department were set up under the University. North China University

In the spring of 1948, the CPC Central Committee decided to merge North China United University and Northern University into North China University. This merger was to expand the scale of higher education to cultivate a large number of cadres for the forthcoming national liberation. Northern University was founded inborder areas of Shanxi,Hebei, Shandong, and Henan provinces in November 1945. It was the then largest institution of higher education with relatively wide range of disciplines found by the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Central Bureau of the Communist Party of China and the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Border Area Government. Fan Wenlan was appointed as university president. The Northern University adopted the Principal Accountability System. It consisted of the School of Administration, School of Finance and Economics, School of Education, School of Engineering, School of Medicine, School of Agriculture, and the School of Arts.Read More…

 

Renmin University of China

On October 1, 1949, People’s Republic of China was founded. In order to cultivate talents with professional knowledge and basic understanding of Marxism-Leninism to construct the new China, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to establish Renmin University of China by merging the North China University and the China University of Political Science and Law.
