A: The referee must be at least an associate professor.

A: Currently, CGS doesn`t sponsor for this specific program. However, you can visit: cis.chinese.cn for more information.

Q: Can student who`s currently studying in China apply for CGS?

A: Yes. However, CGS is preferably given to those who got the last degree abroad. The University Program has very limited quota for those who`s currently studying in China.

Q: I want to study Chinese language, can I apply for CGS?

A: Yes. You can apply through CGS. You can also apply to study Chinese through Hanban Scholarship. For more information, visit: cis.chinese.cn

Q: Do you have specific requirement for the recommendation letter?

A: No. Please contact the referee directly, and ask him/her to sign the letter. The letter has to be original. No photocopy, scan or fax is accepted.

Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS)

Q: Who can apply for Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS)?

A: Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS) has different programs, which include but not limited to the one semester Chinese language program, one year Chinese language program, Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, etc. For more information, please visit: cis.chinese.cn

Q: Should the applicant be staying abroad?

A: CIS is given to non-Chinese applicant, it`s preferably given to those who had never studied in China before. If you are non-Chinese citizen, you don`t have to live abroad to apply for it.

Q: Is there age limit for CIS?

A: Applicant must be aged between 16 and 35. For the applicant of the Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, the age limit is 45.

Q: I`m current in my 4th year of undergraduate study and haven`t got the degree yet, can I still apply for Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages?

A: Applicant must submit the related certificate (e.g., pre-graduate certificate), and submit the photocopy of degree when register. If the applicant fails to submit the related document, the scholarship will be revoked.

Q: Should I submit the HSK test score when I apply for CIS and what level you require?

A: Depends on different programs you apply for, you are required to submit the HSK and HSKK test report of different levels. For more information, please visit: cis.chinese.cn

Q: I cannot find HSK test center in my city, but my major was Chinese language in my undergraduate study, should I still submit HSK test report when I apply for Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages?

A: If you apply for Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, your HSK must reach the minimum requirement. If you cannot submit the test report due to the reason you stated, please contact the university directly, the university will review your language proficiency, an interview and/or test will apply.

Q: There is no Confucius Institute in my city, I cannot get the recommendation from the local embassy either. I`ve never be in China and I don`t know any teacher or staff from any Chinese universities, can the referee be the university I applied for?

A: Yes. You must contact the university directly and get the approval. You can find the contact information of the university at: cis.chinese.cn. If your country doesn`t have Confucius Institute, you can apply through any university which offer Chinese language course.

Q: What`s the procedure of application?

A: All the applicant must log on to: http://cis.chinese.cn, create account and password. Applicant can check the receiving institutes` information and majors, fill out the form and upload required documents, print the form and sign.

Applicant must also log on to: iso.ruc.edu.cn, create account and password, fill out the form, print and sign.

Applicant should then send all the above documents to the International Student Office by post.

Q: Can I download the application from CIS website and then fill it in?

A: Applicant can download the sample form from the website as a reference, however, applicant still needs to fill out the form online. All the information must be submit online and then print the form.

Q: I`ve never been in China and don`t know anyone in China, how can I write down my contact person`s information?

A: The contact person should be the one whom we can contact in case of emergency. It can be anyone, wherever he/she maybe.

Q: Should my referee a staff at the recommending agency I picked?

A: Yes, the referee must be the staff at the recommending agency. Anyone who`s applying for Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, the referee must be the associate professors.

Q: I noticed that there are Chinese language, Chinese history, Chinese philosophy, Education, etc. Which one should I pick?

A: For the one-semester and one-year scholarship applicant, Chinese language, Chinese history, Chinese philosophy are available. For the Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, pick education.
